About Us

About the House

An Italianate built in 1860, this brick house has been recently renovated by the Meyers. The house and grounds were in desperate need of repair. The Meyers, inspired to make the house smile again, spend two years every weekend completing most of the project themselves. Some of these aging elements were purposefully left to allow the house to reveal it's history and allows its unique character to shine through.

The house has been refreshed to a French Country Farmhouse design, having an eclectic charm of old and new. The barn wood used throughout the house was gathered from Sondra's family century farm. The house designed with comfort in mind has a living room with a large couch and chairs to gather and visit while the dining room allows others to gather for a meal. The gallery kitchen has all new appliances in which the guests are welcome to use.

While most of the restoration is completed, there are a few things left to complete such finishing the driveway and completing the backyard landscape which will be amazing once completed.

About Your Hosts

Hello and welcome to the Gathering House, a Bed and Breakfast Home. Let us tell you about ourselves and our home.

Paul, being a Cornell graduate from 1973, has many fun stories of his days at Cornell especially on the football team. He was a Political Science and Education major and spend many years teaching. After we married (6 months to be precise), we bought and office products store in DeWitt, IA of which we have owned for over 30 years. You will find Paul most often tinkering in the garage working on his next "honey do" project. (Lucky me!)

Sondra is a farm girl raised north of Elvira between DeWitt and Clinton, IA. Being part of a big family, she learned how to serve big meals and entertain neighbors and family. Being a Human Resource and Safety Manager for many years, she is willing to let you bend her ear. You will find her most often tending her flower gardens and preparing your breakfast. She most recently earned her Master Gardener status. The best way to learn is working side by side another gardener!

We truly hope that you will find our home comfortable and inviting. Our goal for you is to gather together with your family and friends to rekindle, restore and enjoy.
